Congratulations! Loren Wells from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada as the 1st Place Majors Finisher and winner of the 2015 GAYP National Open Majors Tournament. Congratulations! CM Alan Millhone from Belpre, OH as 2nd Place Majors Finisher and the US GAYP National Open Majors Champion. Congratulations! Alex Weaver from Hackensack, NJ as the 3rd Place Finisher and Aden Keim from Fredericksburg, OH as the 4th Place Finisher.
Congratulations! Grover Minor from Greensboro, NC as the US GAYP National Open Minors Champion. Congratulations! John Gibson from Tuscumbia, AL as 2nd Place Minors Finisher and Harley Hochstelter from Sugarcreek, OH as 3rd Place Minors Finisher.
Congratulations! Wilma Wolverton from Grain Valley, MO as the 2015 GAYP National Open Women Champion.
Frank Davis opened the tournament by welcoming a field of 32 players from 14 states that registered to play. There were at least 10 other checker players who visited during the National but didn't register to play: Bobby Rice-Columbia, KY; Anthony Bishop-College Grove, TN; Steve Watkins-Clarksville, TN; Ernie Stephens-Ringgold, GA; Larry Hunt from Watertown, TN; Michael Holmes-Louisville, KY. I can't recall others, but Albert Tucker was on his way Sunday to play in the tournament and had to turn back because of illness.
There were 7 entrants from OH, 5 from TN, 4 from NC, 2 from AL, MO, & FL and 1 each from KY, GA, OK, IA, SC, MS, NY, & NJ and a player each from Barbados and Canada. This field included 8 ACF & WCDF Grand, International, or Candidate Masters, and 6 more soon to be titled master players, and all participating for the ≈ $5,400 prize funds.
Players were welcomed to Comfort Suite - Lebanon by a nice front desk counter display sign announcing: Welcome! The 20th GAYP National Open Checker Tournament - July 27th - 30th 2015 | Comfort Suites in Lebanon, TN - Sponsored by American Checker Federation |
Frank Davis begin our pre-tournament business meeting by calling on Ken Christian for our opening invocation. Frank announced this GAYP National Tournament was special since it was dedicated to and named for IM John R. Webster, our “Tournament Honoree” who was particularly selected because of his lifetime of dedication to checkers. He played, supported, and promoted tournaments checkers. There was numerous pictures and articles on the playing room wall about John Webster's checker accomplishments. A number of players gave praise, kind words, and testimonials about John helping them, introducing checkers to them, and bring players into the game. Jeff Webster, John's nephew, (his oldest brother's son) presented the main ceremony, giving some early history about their family connection to Newell Banks. John's Father owned a general store and frequently invite Banks to their home. Mr. Webster would bring in Banks for checker exhibitions. John was presented a nice plaque. At the closing John spoke about how much he loved checkers and appreciate the recognition. It was a fitting tribute to John, and he even got in some humor by saying he thought about giving us a picture of himself, but no need for that, since we must have found one at the Post Office.
Frank covered Tournament Format & Schedule, Playing Rules, and Prize Fund Payout Schedule. He opened the floor for discussion on Master to decide on clocks, length of time per round, how to handle forfeit & bye, and endgame decisions if not decided by the clock rules. Masters voted for 3 hour rounds or 1˝ hour per game and if either opponent wanted a time clock then both games are played under clock rules. As it turned out, this was not an issue since there were 10 Masters who played a round robin and a final round of Swiss. The Majors division had 16 players and there was no withdrawals so they played 10 rounds of Swiss with their final round as a repair round when necessary. There were 6 Minors players who played a double round robin.
This year’s prize fund would not have been possible if not for the generous contributions from many players and particularly Joe McDaniel.
All GAYP Tournament Contributors will get a copy of this year's select Master games and past 3 years of National games if they request them.
There was plenty of cold bottle water available from an ice chest in the playing room and a variety of soda on the back table with cups and ice.
Comfort Suites staff was excellent by keeping hot coffee available all day in the lobby and a tray of freshly baked cookies in the evenings.
Grover and Carolyn Minor shared their 60th Anniversary cake with the players Monday afternoon.
All players received door prizes of some type which were supplied by several local merchants, Wilson County Visitors Center, Wilson County Chamber of Commerce, Wilson Bank & Trust, and Cracker Barrel.
We experienced a first time tournament player but a deftly skilled internet player who overwhelmingly dominated the Majors Division. Welcome to our National, Mr. Loren D. Wells!
Joe Schwartz suggested we take up a collection by passing his hat to support Frank and Mary in their sponsor and directorship of this tournament.
We appreciate Frank Davis, Tournament Director and Referee in addition to Mary Davis, scorekeeper who did a fantastic job as usual.
Wednesday evening Joe Schwartz graciously invited all players, family, and friends to dinner at Ryan’s on 405 S Cumberland Street. Everyone enjoyed the good food & fellowship and it was definitely much appreciated by all who partook.
George Gerhauser made a nice video of our 2015 GAYP National and put it on YouTube. Also Joe Moore posted results and pictures on facebook - “USA Checkers”.
We collected a nice number of ACF renewals and new memberships, making us 100% for this National!
I noticed GM Jack Francis demonstrating his draughts ambassador skills by playing nearly everyone at the tournament; a gentleman with great sportsmanship qualities!
We had an exceptional good number of wives who attended this tournament.
Richard Beckwith had some checker books and magazines for sale, and particularly a supply of the newest edition of the 2015 International Checkers Hall of Fame (ICHF) Checkers Annual magazine.
There was a list of nearby Restaurants and Things To Do! in Lebanon posted on the wall.
Most players enjoyed at least several meals with each other at either Shoney's breakfast & lunch buffet, O’Charley’s, Cracker Barrel, Applebee's, Ryan's, Subway, or Demos’.
A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended!
